About: This blog post is the first in a series of posts which will cover step by step instructions for installing and configuring new instance of SQL Server 2012 using the setup installation wizard.
Before starting the installation process, make sure you have the proper hardware and software configuration in place. It is also important that you choose the correct version of SQL Server for download. Though SQL Server 2012 is supported on FAT32 file system but not recommended, it is highly recommended to install SQL Server 2012 on computers with NTFS file format.
Download free full-featured trial versions of SQL Server 2012 that you can use for up to 180 days.
After the download is complete go to the destination folder. The installation file is an ISO image file, you will need to either burn the image on a DVD or use any third party tool (i.e. magic disk) to explore the contents of ISO image file.
Once you have the environment in place, you can now start the installation. Before you begin it is better to perform system check which can be done using the tool provided by SQL Server 2012 itself. After successfully testing the minimum requirements you can proceed with the installation.
First from the root folder, double-click Setup.exe file.
Once the Installation Wizard runs the "SQL Server Installation Center", click the Planning link on the left pane and then choose "System Configuration Checker".
Before the installation begins, prerequisites will be checked on your system and failed rules need to be fixed before you proceed further.
Once the system compatibility check is passed, click on "Installation" link in the left pane and then click on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation" link in the right pane to begin the installation process.
After rechecking the "Support Rules" you will be prompted with the screen to either enter the 25 character product key or "Specify a free edition" such as "Evaluation" or "Express". Make your selection and click next.
Read and accept the license terms and click next.
Wizard will install the required Setup Files.
Another quick check will run and after passing the rules you will be asked to select the feature component to install.
Make selection of features you want to install, for this example I have selected all the available features from the list.
Installation Rules window will appear and if the operation completed successfully, click next.
Instance Configuration screen will appear with the Installed Instances, since there is no instance already installed, the window is empty.
Give name to your SQL Server instance or use the default name and click next.
Depending on the selected features setup will review the required disk space, if passed click next.
On Server Configuration screen specify the SQL service account (this has to be a dedicated domain account not the local account), or leave everything as default. You can specify the "Startup Type" for SQL Services either Manual or Automatic and can also make post installation changes to these accounts from "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Services.msc".
Once done click next
On Database Engine Configuration screen specify the authentication security mode. Make sure you have selected the Mixed Mode authentication and provided the password for 'sa' account and also specified the SQL Server administrators.
For now, on Analysis Services Configuration screen specify the user with administrative rights and click next leaving other options selected as default.
I will try to cover Multidimensional and Data Mining Mode vs Tabular Mode in another discussion.
On this screen make selection for your reporting services mode and proceed next.
Distributed Replay Client topic require separate discussion, so for now specify the Controller Name and click next.
Make your choice for Error Reporting and click next.
After successfully testing the rules for installation process, move to next screen.
Finally based on the selections you made for the installation a summary window will appear. Review the information which is ready to be installed and click the Install button.
And finally the message we were waiting for, Installation completed successfully with product updates.
Restart the computer and enjoy.
