Environment Applies to: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, SQL Server 2012 SP1, Hyper-v
Since the release of Dynamics AX 2012 and then later the R2, been very much busy installing and configuring several standalone and small-scale instance of AX on Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. Microsoft has released virtual machines with preconfigured AX2012 R2, but doing it by yourself is always the best way to unfold the new features.
Making time to write is always something of a struggle. I finally decided to invest my thoughts over the weekend to shape up step by step instructions for installing Dynamics AX 2012 R2.
I always recommend installing AX roles component by component basis, i.e. first install DB, AOS then Client, Debugger and Visual Studio AddIns.
Lets start by validating the system requirements and installing or configuring the missing prerequisites. Please note prerequisites may vary depending on selected operating system and it's a best practice to run prerequisties check before starting the installation.
From the root folder, double-click Setup.exe file and then click on Validate system requirements to start the validation.
For the demo purpose I decided to install all AX components. Select all the listed components and click Validate.
After verifying that your computer meets the prerequisites for the selected components it will prompt you the screen with prerequisite status. Download or configure the missing prerequisites and click next after revalidating the list.
After successfull validation select the installation type as Custom Installation and click next.
You can install multiple components in one shot, but as recommended I will install AX components one by one. Select Databases from the list and click next.
A quick validation screen will run and if the prerequistie status is Success, click next.
Enter the name of computer running SQL Server or computer name with instance name if you want to install it on a specific instance.
Enter the main and baseline database names and make sure that the logged in user account has the approriate permissions to create this database.
Select the additional models to install and click next.
Prerequisites validation wizard will run one more time before starting the installation.
Upon success, you are ready to install your database. Click install button to start the installation process.
Here we go with success status.
Your database is installed successfully, now you can move ahead and install other AX components.
